International Friendship Day 2011

In celebration of International Friendship Day, activities from different cultures all over the world were planned for students during the MT periods on April 11. PSG volunteers set up craft stations such as Bunga Manggar ( a traditional decoration used in Malay wedding ceremonies), Mehndi (Henna handpainting originating from India), and Origami Windmills and Hearts (the traditional art of paper folding originating from Japan).

Dances originating from Trinidad and the Philippines were popular with the students too. Many showed off their dexterity at the Limbo Dance ( which originated from the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean) where they had fun trying to dancing under the gradually lowered limbo pole. Lasallians had to be quick-footed while trying out the Tinikling, the national dance of the Philippines which involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance.

What a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the bonds of friendship !

Commissioning of Catechist

The "Commissioning of Catechist" was a simple yet meaningful blessing by Fr Joachim Chang. The short ceremony held during mass demonstrated our commitment as parent catechists to lead Lasallians in our faith. I personally felt strengthened to spread God's Word confidently. It was a fitting start to the DLSS catechism programme.

Familiarization Tour of DLSS Holding Site at 38 Teck Whye Crescent

The much-anticipated familiarization tour of the Teck Whye Holding Site was held on November 13, 2010. Following a briefing by Mr. Kenny Reyes on 11 December, 2010, PSG members conducted more than 30 tours to close to 1,000 parents on November 13, 2010.

During tours around the rustic, sprawling and tree-lined site, PSG members fielded questions from parents who were eager to get a glimpse into the site where their children would spend the next 2 years. PSG members also collated feedback from parents and channeled them to Mr. Reyes.

By the end of the day, although members had sore, aching feet, we were happy to have served as a bridge between parents and the school !

Off to another great year, this year DLSS participated in the "Back to School with Dad" organised by the Centre for Fathering Singapore.

Details as below.

Date: January 4 – 8, 2010 To encourage men with school-going children to be more actively engaged in their children’s school-life and educational experience. Futher to that, we want to spur fathers to kick off your childs day with a healthy breakfast and a walk from the nearest MRT station, this will add into their 60min of physical activity a day for a healthy mind and body. CFF inaugurated this initiative in 2007. Once again in early 2010, CFF will be sounding the call, for all fathers to accompany their children to school at least once during the first week of a fresh school year.

We want to encourage schools to promote this event as a realtionship building and healthy movement to motivate the fathers to step up and play an integral part of their childrens education life. We are launching a contest to reward Schools and fathers that have shown their support in this initiative.

Choral Exchange Programme with Ramdiz Singers, Philippines

The Lasallian community in Singapore hosted the Ramdiz Singers from The Philippines in a choral exchange programme from 15 November to 21 November 2009. As part of the exchange programme, the Ramdiz Singers will be engaging in several cultural and musical exchanges with the choir members of De La Salle School.

The Ramdiz Singers was organised by Brother Rolando R. Dizon in Novemer 2008 with a mission to nurture young boys and girls to become youth singing ambassadors in the province of Negros Occidental located in Bacolod City in The Philippines. There will be 15 singers between the ages of 10 and 13 who will be joining us on this exchange programme.

The Ramdiz Singers, together with the De La Salle School Choir will be putting up a concert, ‘One Heart ,One Voice’, at De La Salle School Hall on 20 November 2009 at 4pm.

More than 30 parents came together to prepare for the L.E.A.F days games.

On the 12-13 Mar, Lasallians will be putting aside their academic books to participate in character building activities where they will learn and experience new skills and be fulfilled at the end of the project. The theme for the LEAF project this year is: Learn and Be Enriched .. Try ad Never Give Up.

The PSG will be running 10 different activies on the day, to enchance some of the good values that our Lasallians should be possess.

Prayer Room gets a facelift !

A Holy Water font has been added, Lasallians can now bless themselves when they enter ther Prayer Room.

Holy water is blessed by a priest, and is thus consecrated to God. It is used to remind us in a symbolic way of our entry into life through the baptism of water. Because water is a cleanser and a refresher, it reminds us when we use it of the need for clearing our conscience of sin, and for cleansing our mind of distractions that interfere with prayer. Holy water does not produce these effects, but is a visible, bodily help to activate ourselves to prayer and worship by these and similar thoughts.

We have also added a Prayer Basket for Lasalllians to leave their joy, sorrows or petition for God.

Reading Moms trained !

On the first Wednesday of the school year, 12 parent volunteers gathered in Computer Lab One for a briefing on the 'I Can Read' programme by Md Koh Ting Ting. Previously, we were using reading cards with the P3 and P4 students. This year, the students will use the computer programme, PM Plus, as well as the reading cards, to inject some fun into the reading sessions.

Md Koh was very helpful and shared with us her expertise and experience in this area. Her energy and enthusiasm were inspiring. We hope we can help these students, who come to us once a week, to improve their command of the English language and to develop a love for reading. We also want to give them a good dose of encouragement and some TLC every week!

First project from Parent Support Group this year! Members were engaged at the 2 gates of the school to welcome the P1 Lasallians and parents. Either the milk powder is getting nourishing or due to global warming, the children are really getting smarter and more independent. Not a single Lasallian cried. But one mommy did !!

Polymer Clay workshop

I am thankful to DeLa Salle School for organizing the Clay Making Activity and the Parenthood Talk on 08/11/2008.

I am fortunate to have gained these wonderful experiences through such meaningful activities. The process of the clay making conducted by the speaker, Mr How was clear and precise. We all enjoyed the whole session and the molding of the snail fridge magnet is something we had not done before.

As for the Parenthood Talk, I have learnt to communicate better with my children through many ways. From when to teach to when to punish, everything was really useful.

On the whole , we as parents enjoyed it very much and we strongly felt that the Speaker, Mr How’s suggestions and guidelines were extremely useful.

Thanksgiving Mass Choir practise

Today we have kicked off our 3 days choir practise for the upcoming Thanksgiving Mass on 10th Nov. More than 60 Lasallians led by Ms Michelle and Ms Irene, the choir mistresses, has come together and raised their Angelic voices to praise God together. It is really beautiful !! We will be singing the following songs:

Cultural Night was held on Saturday July 19th. Students and their families were invited to school to appreciate and enjoy the different cultures that we have in Singapore. Planning started months ahead, and as the date drew near, things began to fall into place. We started to decorate the school 2 days before, and on the day itself, the school was awash with the colours of the ethnic races of Singapore. I have never seen the school look so beautiful!

The event started at 4pm, when the guest-of-honour, Brother Collin, arrived. The school dancers performed little segments of Indian, Malay and Chinese dance to welcome him as he walked up the red carpet with our Principal and Vice-Principals. I was very impressed by the young dancers...they were so graceful and such a joy to watch!

Everyone gathered at the courtyard for the opening speeches, and then the flurry of activities started in different parts of the school.

In the courtyard, we had the Chinese orchestra from Yew Tee CC, followed by the Filipino Tinikling (bamboo dance) by our very own Filipino parents. It was excellent! Our principal, Miss Lim, and vice-principal, Md Ng, were very sporting and tried the dance. I watched in anxiety, fearing for the safety of their ankles. Thank goodness no ankle was caught between the thick bamboo poles. They are very brave, I must say!

Because of light rain, the courtyard activities were moved to the hall. There was a line dance by teachers, parent volunteers and students, led by Mrs Luanna Goh, who looked smashing in a cowgirl's outfit, complete with boots and a cowboy hat. Then there was a wushu display by our students.

Elsewhere in the school, many other things were happening. Children were playing traditional games like 5 stones, chatek and carrom in the Lasallian corner. At the outdoor stage area, there were choral singing, Indian and Filipino folktales, and Mandarin rhymes.

In the atrium outside the general office, you could try your hand at sari-tying, ketupat weaving, Chinese painting and Chinese knot-tying.. There were also 5 Japanese in yukatas and kimonos teaching origami. You could choose to make a ball, a crane or a samurai helmet from the little squares of paper. (Many thanks to Hayashi-san and his friends who came just to share their passion for this hobby.) Those who don't feel like working so hard can sit still and have a henna painting done on their hands. There was even a Meridian acupressure class given by one of our parents!

In the canteen, there was a smorgasbord of flavours-- roti jala, laksa, kebab, shepherd's pie, sushi, dim sum, satay....even the kacang-puteh man was there, selling nuts in paper cones! How nostalgic!

All too soon, these activities had to end as the concert in the hall was about to start. At 6.30pm, people were still wanting to do some more origami or play some more games, but we had to apologise and chase them into the hall. By 7pm, most people were in the hall and our very entertaining MC, Greg (another parent volunteer), kept the children occupied with little quizzes and prizes. The concert started with a video of some DLS students saying what culture means to them. (We have very eloquent speakers amongst us!) The school dancers performed beautiful ethnic dances. They moved with such fluidity and their costumes were a visual treat. We also heard the school choir sing 2 songs. It was wonderful to see the children performing so ernestly. The night ended with us giving out light sticks to everyone and waving them in the darkened hall while singing 'Home', one of the National Day songs. It was a very apt ending to our cultural carnival. I was almost bursting with pride and patriotism as I waved my light stick and sang along. God bless Singapore and De La Salle!

PSG outing !

Members and LaSallians got a real treat today ! Mr Kamil, father of Ely Nasrin has arranged an executive tour to the K9 unit at Choa Chu Kang. All were shown how the dogs are trained, how they obey their partner and what types of hurdles they have to endevour. We then moved to the carpark lot, we saw how the nactorics dog are trained to snuff out drugs from cars, these dogs are used at the border area for the Immigrations and Control Authorities. There were many other demo that we got to see. It is a rare and fantastic visit we got.

We then moved to a Book Warehouse (Pansing), organised by Mrs Ng, Ann-Marie and Adriel's mom. Mrs Ng showed us through the warehouse to see how a bookshop like Borders would place an order with the warehouse and how the books are then sorted and packed before shipping off to them. A real eye-opener. There was even a better surprise to come, we were then lead into a broadroom, filled with books. And guess what, we all chose and bring a book home for free !!

After such a wonderful morning, we returned back to Choa Chu Kang and enjoyed a Pizza Hut lunch.

小六离校会考母语口试工作坊

　　副校长---秀珠要我于4月2日晚帮忙校方特为家长举办的小六离校会考母语口试工作坊拍些照。我不是专业摄影师，又没有那种可以转来转去的长长变焦镜头的照相机，本想推却，可是盛情难却，只好硬着头皮接受这项任务。当晚看到值得一拍的，我就赶紧按快门，反正是数码照相机，拍多也不浪费。

　　其实也是托她的福，我才有机会参与这项蛮有意义的工作坊。要不，我孩子还在念小四，我是没 “资格” 参与的。

　　工作坊以华语，巫语和淡米尔语讲解，分别在学校的礼堂，会议室和视听室(AVA Room) 同时举行。出席的家长有两百多人，这样的出席率是令人鼓舞的。

　　不管是华文，巫文或淡米尔文，老师们都使出浑身解数，利用微软简报，图文并茂，深入浅出地讲解母语口试的各项评鉴项目的评分标准，应留意的事项，争取高分的窍门，同时解答了家长常有的共同疑问。

　　之后，再来个考场模拟，理论配合实践，让家长们融会贯通、透彻理解先前老师们的讲解。一家长发现考场模拟的实用价值后，探询可否在小六的口试前，让孩子的母语老师也给她的孩子一个模拟考场的口试。提出这要求的家长虽是有点 “怕输” ，但我却觉得那可是一个很有建设性的意见。校方可在学校的口试前一个月让学生们进行模拟考场的口试，再让学生们和家长们知道孩子在哪方面表现得好，哪方面得多加留意。相信模拟考场的口试将让学生们受益不浅。只是老师们的工作量已达饱和，可否还能挤出额外的时间进行这项活动?

　　有一家长不晓得可带孩子出席而深觉惋惜。是的，这样的一个工作坊，是值得家长和孩子一起出席。也许日后，若活动适合孩子参与的话，校方可鼓励家长携带孩子出席。

　　从家长们踊跃和积极地提问，可感受到这个小六离校会考母语口试工作坊是成功的。要是错过这个工作坊的家长在获知此工作坊的内容是如此丰富和有价值时，可要后悔莫及，徒乎奈何。

　　其实当晚看到夜幕低垂的当儿，所有的母语老师，不管是教上午班或下午班的，副校长，运营经理，保安人员，家长义工团等等都都留下来为这个富有意义的工作坊出一份力，甚是感动。别忘了这些幕后英雄可没有超时津贴，有些隔天还得一大清早来上班。

　　搞一个这样的活动所用的物力财力不说，还得如此劳师动众，费时费力，相信校方在搞这些活动给家长参与时，准是经过一番深思熟虑。因此日后校方特为家长而办的活动，时间分配得来的话，家长是不该轻易错失良机，以免事后捶心肝。 (contributed by NgAikSeng)

Prayer Room sessions

PSG has taken over the running of the prayer rooms from 12^th Feb. The prayer room is now open 20 minutes before school commences, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The response has been overwhelming, and we even have to turn away some Lasallians when the room is too full. Our programs include, Children liturgy, Gospel reading, hymns, personal sharing, Stations of the Cross, rosary and Saints days.

Parents are most welcome to join us in these sections and if you ever feel inspired to share your faith with the Lasallians, please do not feel shy to contact us. We love to have you!

Appreciation of the Eucharistic presence

We had a combined catechism class for our Pr2s in the morning and the Pr1s in the afternoon. Jillian, one of our parent catechists, having gone for a training course under the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, shared with the children the meaning behind the wine and the water in the chalice and the gesture of Epiclesis. We hope that they will understand better and appreciate the Eucharistic presence during mass. We are planning for a similar session for the other levels next term.

Reading Parents get BIGGER rooms

Parents were given an opportunity to join
the Lasalllians for the last period of the day, meeting the teachers and their classmates. They finally found out who their children were talking so excitedly about when they get home.

PSG members were deployed to help in directing the parents to the hall and classrooms. They also helped fellow parents by answering any questions that they might have.

Briefing session for “Reading Parents”

The “reading” parents gathered for the first time this year for a briefing session conducted by the teachers in charge headed by Madam Azizah. The teachers and the parent volunteers had a fruitful discussion on ways to make this programme more interesting for the children.

This year not only are we blessed with more parents volunteering their time to read with the children, we have finally a “reading dad”. Thanks to Ash for having decided to sacrifice his lunch break to come join us. With our newly found hero, we are no longer “reading moms” but “reading parents”!

Mrs Judy Yip has taken over from Mrs Luanna Goh as the Religious Education Co-ordinator. From what I heard Luanna has been helping in the formation of the Lasallians' spiritual faith for more than 10 years. Here I would like to thank Luanna for all her great work and effort !!

The Volunteer Catechists together with the Catholic teachers met over 2 sessions at the Prayer room to share and discuss what was new for the year. Seasoned catechists also shared with new ones on student control, lesson plans and so on.

This is certainly an exciting day for our new P1 Lasallians, new school, new friends. They will be paired up by their buddies in P4 for a week to show them the canteen, playground and all that they need to know.

Parents Volunteers were at both front and side gates to help the anxious parents by answering any questions that they might have.

Learning Trip to Botanic Gardens

It's a morning of botanical learning and discovery for a group of teachers and PSG members.

The PSG members were preparing ourselves to help the teachers to facilitate an impending field trip for parents of P2 Lasallians in Nov 2007.

We learnt about plants, things that grow on plants and things that plants grow on. We took notes, took photographs... It was good to be students afresh.

We took away knowledge, awareness and observation of many little things. The next time we're back at the Botanic Garden, it would be a much bigger crowd.

Charity Walk @ West Coast Park

Walk for a good cause - that was the reason why so many Lasallians and their parents, teachers and staff of the school and PSG members turned up at the West Coast Park on the morning of 29 Sep 07.

We started with a mass warm up session with aerobic exercise.

Teachers learnt balloon sculpting and sold their creations on the spot for a good cause.

It was a lovely picnic for some Lasallians and their family...

Other Lasallians and families had fun competing against each other to reach out for the sky...

And one almost touched the sky!
